This past couple of months, couple of years have been hard on united states all, stretched us to our limits and this yr I've felt I've needed Spring more than than e'er before. That certainly that things will shift, elevator, and lighten as the days pass. That nothing is e'er permanent, that we are and always will be in a constant state of change.
When the days are at their darkest, when the shadows creep in, Spring is promise. Spring is sun on our skin. And when it feels like it's all going to shite - it'south more important than ever that we all seed the light.
This Spring marks the closing of a affiliate for us hither and so it many ways it feels like a new year. Despite 'information technology all' my friends nosotros are still here and with each new day, each new spring bloom I spot on my walks, I feel my heart shifting, softening, every bit it lets the light in…
Over the adjacent year we'll continue to concord infinite for our vibrant online communities at Sketch and Print Club. I'll be teaching in person in one case or twice a month, working some incredible practitioners and in some stunning locations.
And I'll exist taking one solar day a week to focus on my ain budding creative practice over at elliegreenartist - answering a deep calling to sink into my own expression - through pen, through brush. The days of Ellie Green rushing around from colonnade to mail are a ghost of the by as I no longer want to move fast - I'd rather take things slow, let the piddling moments motility me and let life unfold.
Equally always, deepest gratitude to you lot all for staying with me on the ever unfolding journey…
And then much honey and light - Ellie xxx

And as it'southward Sunday - pop this little soul soother, heart opener of a hymn on and take a moment to let these words motion through you.

Ellie Greenish Artist
I'one thousand taking a running leap at something new my friends and it's thrilling and terrifying in equal measure - equally the best things oftentimes are.
In life I believe at that place are two paths we can take - the fated path, the one that seems seems somehow limited to 1 aspect of the self - or the soul led path - one that embraces all aspects of the self, nurtures each facet of the heart.
On this latter path, I believe that there are hidden gems within us, just waiting to be discovered, awakened…
In order to live a soul led life, we must offset let become of the expectations that nosotros have placed upon ourselves, or unwittingly absorbed on our journeying through life. In their place we must make space - to be quiet, to listen, to effort new things and to explore - just then will these new aspects of ourselves to be revealed.
As we gently peel away the layers of workout and allow ourselves the correct weather condition to flourish - we begin to discover our truthful talents.
This is the journey I'm on right now and I've found that launching my own artist folio is already allowing me to express parts of myself that have until now, not had the space to sally…

On the VERY final day of a VERY long January that had felt VERY much like wading through treacle…I dusted off my chapeau and took a train to London to watch the amazing Spells Songs live in concert.
And equally I watched Jackie Morris waving her magic paintbrush, hymns of nature swirling around her in notes and song, I was but and so deeply moved, inspired and utterly, well, spell-bound .
What inspired me most I think, was witnessing this incredible collaboration between musicians, writers, artists - bringing together their skills in harmony to create an offering with a heartfelt message.
A message of hope to all the 'silver seekers' out there, niggling gifts of light in the ascent darkness of the modern twenty-four hour period.
I needed that light, that reminder, that moment.
I needed to know that there were others out there, like me, who believed in a better futurity for our planet, who wanted to be a good ancestor.
And most of all, I needed to know that in gild to do this I didn't need to alter a thing - just wave my magic paintbrush and heighten my voice to sing near the things I care about.
If yous're yet hither, scroll down to the link below to listen to the Lost Words Blessing.
May it inspire y'all to raise your vox, your magic brush also.

The Wisdom in the Woods - Sketchbook Guild Fall Season
Heed to the wisdom of the copse.. for trees know you can exist even so and abound at the same time…
The Autumn of 2020 has truly been a season similar no other - the first certainly where nosotros've been actively encouraged to stay as far away from one another equally possible. One where many of us have felt isolated, alone and yet, despite all this, as a creative customs nosotros accept even so grown, together. Since the end of the summer in late August, Sketchbook Society tutors and students akin have been gently percolating on this beautiful theme - The Wisdom in the Woods .
After the wild shifts of the summer season, where nosotros spent much of our time adjusting the sails to the stormy seas around u.s.a., information technology was fourth dimension to connect to an free energy and a theme that would ground united states of america and help breathe light into the darker days of Autumn - and this journeying has been nothing brusk of awesome.
For those of you curious as to how the structure of our online class works, here's SAS founder Ellie Green introducing the theme for the Autumn season. We teach using a combination of approaches - pre-recorded tutorials and general pep talks, a private facebook group where nosotros connect as a community to share our progress and gain feedback on our work and our online learning portal which is packed with downloadable resources to go along the inspiration flowing from week to week. Because our lessons are pre-recorded, students are able to acccess the tutorial in their own time, at their own stride. In that location's no race to the end line with the states, nosotros requite our students plenty of time in between and afterwards lessons to gently digest each phase of the process.
Members Meet Up
For the starting time time this Autumn we were able to gather our members face up to face, albeit outdoors and at a safe altitude, for a morning of mindful creativity. This was a very special moment for united states of america all and a memory we truly treasured as we moved through the flavour.
After a long summer spent working apart, together, our hearts were oh so total when we stole ourselves away to Leith Hill, Surrey for a morning of socially distanced creativity, connecting to the magic of the woodland at Leith Loma. Ellie ran a beautiful forest bathing meditation and shared some tips on Mindful Photography as we moved through the woods. From the tiptop of the hill we used castor pens to create some quick studies of the stunning pines that line the hillside and are so characteristic of the Surrey Hills. We promise to be able to meet once again at a later phase of the Wintertime season when its safe to do so equally this was such a special moment.
Making our own Oak Gall Ink
Our starter kit for the Autumn term, equally with every term of our online Sketchbook Social club course, included a mystery item. For this flavor we included an Oak Gall Ink making kit! Working from an original recipe that dates back to medieval times, when oak gall ink was used in some of the primeval written manuscripts, nosotros created our own ink and used information technology to capture the regal beauty of Autumnal Oak trees. We learned that Oak Gall ink is quite simply magical and should be used with a light touch as the ink itself changes tone as information technology dries - much to everyone's surprise!
Piece of work in progress
Take a look into the Sketchbooks of some of our students over the Fall flavour. Through a mixture of observational drawing, photography, print-making and painting we captured the changes in the forest through the season - creating studies of copse, leaves, bark, mushrooms, woodland mice, moss, lychen and so much more! Mono-printing was a firm favourite with our students this term and then we'll definitely be bringing some print-making magic to our Winter season too.
It always comes together in the end my friends
And finally, hither you'll find but a pocket-size snippet of the absolutely spectacular outcomes that some of our students have shared with us this term. Of grade outcomes are but a small role of the creative journey itself but they are a chance to reflect on how far we've come and these students accept come up such a long way both in confidence + skill this term - so its a true honour to be able to share some of their highlights from the term hither. To all our students - nosotros are so proud of you for being dauntless, stepping gently out of your comfort zone with u.s.a. and making this delivery to your own inventiveness and well-being!

MORNING ROUTINE 🌱💭
How can we brand certain nosotros start the twenty-four hours correct, even if we get out of the wrong side of bed?
These days the thoughts seem to rattle effectually in my head before I've fifty-fifty opened my optics. It's all part of the process, I guess, or the hidden processing that these strange times seem to accept accelerated.
Then I've made a few changes to my morn routine that assistance me get my head in check kickoff matter:
ane. Wake upward, kettle on and beverage a pint of water whilst I wait for the kettle to boil (allow'southward face it the body ever needs a beverage commencement thing.
☕️
2. Become exterior (if you tin). As I accept my outset sips of tea I sit on a little cushion in the garden. I soak in the sounds, the smell, the feel of the day. This morning, for case, the frogs are singing for the sunshine ☀️
3. Morning pages. Earlier I pick upwardly my phone at all I'll scrawl out 3 pages of gratuitous-writing into a petty book I picked up from paper chase. I dump everything hither - my weird dreams, any anxiety or fear (better to get information technology out and go out it here than carry it with me all twenty-four hour period).
✍🏻
four. Visualise. Shut your eyes and get a clear picture of your day. It really doesn't hurt to visualise everything going ok, or really well for that thing!
👁
5. Breathe. Later on this I'll shut my optics for x minutes and focus on my animate. I'll let the thoughts come and go until my mind feels a little emptier, a picayune clearer. It helps to set a timer or you lot spend the whole time wondering how long you've sat there for.
💭
That's it! Takes effectually 15-20 mins, no more than. And the ripple consequence it has on the balance of my day is bluntly immeasurable.
Do you lot have a forenoon routine to help calm your listen? I'd love to hear your tips besides! 🌱

On taking time to watch the leaves plow...
Every bit I sit here in a huge jumper with the pelting lashing at the windows I can't help but allow a little smile to pitter-patter across my face. I was pondering why exactly I relish the Autumn flavour and so much this morning in equally I taught my Sketchbook Guild grade and i of my students enlightened me by request - when were you born? I realised that equally a late August infant its peradventure but natural that this is one of my favourite seasons. Gone is the skimpy summertime wear and bare (mighty white) legs of summer - time to bring the focus inwards, low-cal the fire and equally my mum always used to say- if you're common cold, put another jumper on!
If you, like me, are inspired past this bountiful harvest time, you'll no dubiousness detect enough of rich pickings in our Autumn menu. If not, I accept a few ideas on how to stay bright when it all gets a bit cold and informal. This has to be the best time of the year for creativity as the weather outside gives us the perfect alibi to take a brisk walk before to popping the kettle on and settling downwardly for some mindful making.
Fix for a tiresome downward? Hither'due south a few of my tips to help y'all connect to the dazzler of this wonderful season…
Take a Photo-walk..
Final Th I was delighted to be invited back to the 'wood' for a mindful photography workshop in collaboration with The Salt Box. We used their stunning site on the Priory Farm Estate to inspire us slow downwardly and notice the pocket-sized things. If you missed information technology, don't worry, nosotros've got plenty more in store for you lot this season - but hither's a taste of my photography as meditation workshop:
Close your eyes and focus your mind
If you close your eyes, just for a few moments, in whatever situation (not whilst driving please!) it gives both eyes and heed a residue and can assistance you to re-calibrate. Take is equally a CTRL ALT DELETE for your brain. Whilst they are closed, give yourself a few creative boundaries for 'looking'. Use your heed to aid you melody into your surround before y'all even attain for the shutter. You tin endeavor merely looking for texture, or for blueprint, cull one colour and notice where it repeats around you, await for patches of light and the shadows that autumn around them. Yous might also similar to endeavour limiting yourself to a pocket-sized amount of captures. Option a number - 10 to 20 - that'southward probably Enough for a photo-walk. Next time you're taking a tootle in the woods try this and let me know how yous become on!
Make a wreath
Wreaths are by no means just for Christmas! At that place is plenty of inspiration on the hedgerows right now and forage from gardens to be gathered! September offers upwardly a wealth of colour and texture and so there'southward plenty to adorn your door! This flavour we're delighted to accept teamed up with Renee aka the Girl Who Gardens to bring this thought to the studio. We'll be making moss and wire bases for our wreaths (which are so much more than planet-friendly than the traditional florist foam) and then filling them to the brim with provender. You might even be able to 'wreath cycle' your base for your Christmas one! In that location's withal fourth dimension to join us this Sunday 28th September / 10:xxx to 12:30 to larn how to make a beautiful Hedgerow Wreath. Click here to become involved, all forage included!
Pop down to Polesden
You may recollect that this summer we contributed to a sculpture project at Polesden Lacey. Although it was a fab idea, we realised that information technology was probably a job for a professional person sculptor and so the team there recruited an artist from Devon to create their vision of sculptures that reflected the change in season and could besides serve as 'leafage collecting' vessels. The idea is that families and kids can go involved with helping the gardeners keep on top of clearing the leaves this season. So get on down there and get involved - its expert for the soul to appoint in these seasonal activities!

Learn to Knit
Equally a young sprout, I tried countless times to principal the basics of knitting - to the tune of many an exasperated sigh from old granny green! Whatsoever I did, I got my knickers in a right twist and my wool in a terrible tangle and equally a result I didn't touch anything knitting related for well over a decade or lets face information technology - ii! Cue new knitting tutor Sarah North and her Knit Yourself At-home Course. Earlier this year, over 6 sessions (spaced out nicely in one case a fortnight and then we had time to knit in between) square by square, row past row, Sarah FINALLY got me going. And one time I started, I did not stop. Every boring netflix series, every sit downward (even when I nipped home at lunchtime) I knitted! And every fourth dimension I sat down to knit, afterwards a few rows, I'd let out a little sigh.
Why?
Well considering information technology turns out you lot can really knit yourself calm given right guidance and a skilful (no offence granny g) teacher! Afterward the initial warning we all go through when learning something new, it only clicked. And one time information technology clicks it is probably the virtually relaxing pass-fourth dimension I've e'er known. Not simply that, I now accept a stunning blanket, that has grown steadily, to curl up under during this catchy time when the boys are hawking over the thermo. All I can say is give it a become! Knit Yourself Calm with united states of america!
Give something dorsum
They say charity begins at home, but mine's a chip messy since my beloved partner in crime decided to go free-lance also and then we've decided the studio is probably a better fit for our fundraising coffee morning time for Macmillan this Friday 27th September / ten:00 to 11:30! Nosotros'll be offering tea, coffee and cakes plus the gamble to catch our Print-making expert Paul Wye sharing some nuggets of insight into the daily life of an creative person teacher.
Paul will be bringing along a choice of his sketchbooks and an assortment of his print and sculpture work for you to peruse. He'll talk most his journey as both creative person and instructor and volition exist offer a demo on Paper lithography (creating vibrant prints from photo-copied drawings and photographs).
If you've never visited the studio before, or y'all'd like to come forth and back up this important crusade, just drib us an RSVP to booking.surreyartschool@gmail.com. It'south a gratis consequence, (although in that location will be a chance to brand a contribution or buy a cake!) so nosotros only allow us know if you're coming so we tin relieve yous a seat. We'd love to come across yous there!
Acquire something new
We're ever so happy that the world has caught up with us on the impact of Calligraphy on well-beingness. Nosotros know that our students notice a sense of 'flow' in our workshops and that fourth dimension seems to evaporate equally they concentrate all their attention on the up and the downwardly-strokes and on remembering to breathe as they do and so. Every bit I've mentioned many times in this mail service - learning something new tin can be the well-nigh challenging and withal the most rewarding thing you tin can exercise for yous. Once you go over the starting blocks, the thrill at building a new skill is second to none. If you lot've yet to dip your toe into the earth Calligraphy I'd recommend giving Brush Lettering a become. The pen nosotros provide doubles upwards as a cartoon tool and the starter kit of worksheets we supply gives ample opportunity to continue to exercise. With Christmas just around the corner this is the perfect time to brush up on your lettering!
Ok, so its getting night at present - as information technology will do twenty-four hours by day from here on out, and so its probably time for me to wrap upward this trivial post, don my raincoat and effort the swim dwelling house from the studio ;) But I'll leave you with these thoughts:
-
There's no such thing as 'bad weather' - conditions is just weather, we can cull to dance in the rain or come across information technology every bit a pain, its a selection!
-
Autumn is prime time for cuddles - summer is also viscid for that - then make sure you find fourth dimension for lots of these with your nearest and dearest
-
Change your habits, change your life. Make a addiction of making time just to be or to practise the things that calorie-free you up! Bake a cake, accept a walk, talk to someone yous've been missing deep downward, join a class, write a diary. Any it is, shine a fiddling chip of calorie-free back on you as the days darken and y'all'll feel a little bit lighter and brighter as a result. Time is our about valuable resource - claim some dorsum!
Wishing you a gentle start to the new season,
Ellie (SAS Founder)

Dorking Advertiser
Surrey Art School is featured in this week's Dorking Advertiser.
Although nosotros are delighted by the local promotion we'd only similar to stress that Surrey Fine art School was founded to extend what schools are able to offer in terms of Art Education. Information technology is restrictions such every bit the Ebacc that are wholly out of schools' control and that take been pushed by the government, that are having such a negative impact on artistic subjects.
Having taught in schools for the last 8 years, I couldn't have more respect for teachers and schools and the wonderful, relentless and rewarding work they take every day to ensure our young people have a bright creative time to come!
